Hello all! Hope you had a stellar holiday and an amazing New Year party! (I’ll try to keep it down for those of you still nursing hangovers…)
2018 was an amazing year for Doc and I personally and professionally for many reasons, but the most pertinent one here is starting this podcast! Doc and I had spoken for a few years about combining our passions in a fun way that would break down barriers about the discussions around mental health. So, one weekend while traveling to and from Pittsburgh for a Tough Mudder, we came up with the idea of a podcast. Oddly enough, I came up with the title of “Capes on the Couch” just as a filler, but we couldn’t think of anything better (and I love me some alliteration), so it stuck.
We recorded our first episode (Eddie Brock) THREE TIMES before we finally got a version that we were comfortable releasing publicly. And yet, listening to it now, I’d give anything to do it over again. But that’s the benefit of hindsight. We did it just for a lark. We had no idea by year’s end we’d have over FIVE THOUSAND DOWNLOADS. We’re just two idiots talking into a mic (well, one doctor and one idiot 😉 and yet you’ve appreciated what we’ve done so much.
So many things took us by surprise. We never imagined how many cool people we’d interact with thanks to the show. We never would’ve dreamed that we’d cross over with a similar show (hi Popcorn Psychology!) And never in our wildest imaginations would we have thought that any major creators would promote our show… and yet Bill Sienkiewicz, Tom King, and VINCENT FREAKIN’ D’ONOFRIO all tweeted about us. We’re still freaking out about it.
So with an amazing 2018, what’s left to accomplish in 2019? Well, for starters the show obviously has a lot of room to grow. 5,000 downloads is nice. But we’ve decided that we’re going to shoot for 25,000 downloads by this time next year! And creators promoting us is nice, but our goal is to actually interview a creator on the show in 2019 – whether it’s a writer, an artist, or an actor who’s portrayed a character, we want to talk to the people who bring these troubled souls to life. Lastly, we want to continue to improve the quality of our show to always bring you the best in analysis and education, while still keeping the show fun & entertaining. With the continued support of our Patrons (and hopefully more to come), we can begin livestreaming our recording sessions, and expanding our outreach to listeners.
2018 was amazing, but it was just the first step. We’ve got a long way to go before we’re ready to call it quits. 2019 is going to be a bigger and better year for Capes on the Couch. We’ll be back soon, and our first episode back will be all about J. Jonah Jameson! So until next time, fans, remember these words from the late Michelle McNamara: “It’s chaos. Be kind.” Love to you all,
Anthony
