  • Background (05:39)
    • Shredder, aka Oroku Saki created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (May 1984)
    • In the original Mirage comics, Hamato Yoshi & Oroku Nagi were rivals for the love of a woman, Tang Shen, in Japan – when Yoshi killed Nagi, his younger brother Oroku Saki took it upon himself to seek revenge – joined the Foot Clan and worked his way through the ranks to lead the NY branch
    • He killed Yoshi and Tang, and then led the Foot Clan as they took over the NY underworld
    • Battled the Turtles, trained by Splinter, the rat formerly owned by Yoshi – stabbed by Leonardo, offered the chance to commit seppuku, but instead opted to detonate a thermite grenade – Donatello knocked him off a building, where he exploded
    • Resurrected by the Foot Clan using worms, he once again fought the Turtles, where he was decapitated and his body burned
    • Archie Comics – Shredder more in line with animated version, where he’s the recurring enemy of the Turtles
    • IDW Comics – Oroku Saki was leader of the Foot Clan in feudal Japan, and stole ooze from an Utrom (later revealed to be Krang) to preserve his body, until he was resurrected by his descendant Oroku Karai 300 years later – he battled a similarly resurrected Hamato Yoshi (Splinter) and the Turtles – dies by Splinter’s hand
  • Issues (13:42)
    • Revenge against Yoshi bleeds into attacks on Turtles
    • Respect for Leonardo as a leader/rival in battle (22:00)
